The talents of Pete Yorn have been obvious for quite some time now (mostly since his hit single “Strange Condition” that was featured in Me, Myself, and Irene). Scarlett Johansson, on the other hand, is known not for her music talent, but for her work on the silver screen. When I first heard “Regulator” on the radio earlier this year, I was intrigued by her bluesy vocals which are very nicely accompanied by the smooth voice of Yorn.
It wasn’t until recently, however, that I took the time to listen to the entire Break Up album. The album’s very good, and conceptually reminds me of She & Him (Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward). “Search Your Heart” and “Wear and Tear” are two songs that lull you into folky emotional bliss with sweet lyrics and well-structured verses. It really amazes me how much someone like Johansson can accomplish. As if she wasn’t brilliant enough in her movies (especially Lost in Translation), she has helped create this album which shows the versatility of her repertoire.
Overall, I’d say this album is definitely worth buying. Meaningful lyrics and beautiful harmonies prove to be its strongest assets. “Regulator” is by far my favorite song on the album, as few others are able to meet its energy. Here’s a link to the duo’s MySpace page, as well as their album in iTunes.
