SPOON’S TRANSFERENCE

I’ve been VERY excited for the recently released Spoon album, Transference. Their last album (Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga) was absolutely amazing with hits like “Don’t Make Me a Target”, “The Underdog”, and “Don’t You Evah”, and therefore I have been very weary that Transference wouldn’t live up to the previous effort.

After a solid listen to the record, I’m satisfied, yet not blown away. It offers listeners a heavy dose of hard hitting drums that consistently carry otherwise weak tracks. Though I was able to listen to the album all the way through, I found it repetitive. Lead singer, Britt Daniel has a unique voice, yet I became tired of the same thing over and over.

Transference has failed to elicit an emotional response with its empty love songs that are fueled by power chords and pounding drums. It’s growing me a bit though! Songs like “Trouble Comes Running”, “The Mystery Zone”, and “Goodnight Laura” are the light at the end of the tunnel. Just catchy enough to make lesser entertaining tracks less tedious. They are upbeat tunes that serve as perfect breaks from an otherwise dark album.

I give the album 3 out of 5 stars because it’s just not that good. I’ll enjoy it for a few weeks then put it back on the shelves (don’t be offended Spoon fans).
