Montreal’s The Luyas are a magical quartet. They carefully tread the border between pop and experimental with great precision and, particularly with 2012’s Animator, a bit of a spooky edge. Led by Jessie Stein and her haunting, chilling vocals, the band has released three excellent records, including the aforementioned third album, put out last October by Dead Oceans. The band was in Brooklyn late last year and stopped by the wonderful world of sounds and microphones, better known as Gowanus recording studio Degraw Sound, to record two tracks off that album. You can enjoy both “Channeling” and “Fifty Fifty” below!
‘Buzzsessions’ is a live session series made by The Wild Honey Pie. With each new episode, we travel with a different band to a different part of New York City and record sometimes-intimate/sometimes-wild versions of two or three songs. This Buzzsession was shot at Degraw Sound, a Brooklyn recording studio on the Park Slope/Gowanus border, owned and operated by producer/engineer/musician Ben Rice (Blackbells, The Mooney Suzuki).
