Viola Beach Made Music to Make People Happy [Stream]

Viola Beach’s self-titled debut album is sadly their last: a posthumous release from a bright-eyed batch of ambitious young Brits who all died tragically in a car crash, heading up their first show abroad in Sweden. Chris Martin had a few things to say about their youth and promise at this year’s Glastonbury Festival. “Boys That Sing” is the album clincher and official swan song on Viola Beach for indie pop sweethearts Kris Leonard, 20, River Reeves, 19, Jack Dakin, 19, and Tomas Lowe, 27. The band’s beloved manager, Craig Tarry, also died in the accident that night, driving the vehicle. Kris’ girlfriend, Negin Karimi, told NME, “They wrote songs to make people happy,” and that’s exactly what a single like “Boys That Sing” will do, offering strums reminiscent of The Whitest Boy Alive, and a sweet and charming raspiness in Kris Leonard’s own right.
